In February, we had the extreme good fortune of having Amy´s parents come for a visit. David and Joan stayed for ten days, and we thoroughly enjoyed their company. Joan´s parents had actually lived in Ecuador over 30 years ago, working to build mormon church buildings in South America, and Joan was keen to see some of what her father had done. Here they are, resting on the side of a street in Otavalo, under the glare of a beautiful sunny day. Unfortunately, it rained nearly every day they were here, but they were good sports about it and didn´t let it ruin their trip.
One day in the market, Grandpa bought a chess set, and he and Jorie had some fiercely competitive games over the course of their trip. I think Jorie learned a lot of new tricks. Here they are in the house during a match. Perhaps Jorie surreptitiously set Audrey and Bentz to distract Grandpa...
Like most kids (and I include myself here), our kids prefer to ride in the back of the pickup truck rather than inside. Since safety rules haven´t caught up to those in the US yet, we take advantage of that often. In fact, I personally think that every kid should get to ride in the back of a truck. It´s part of growing up. Needless to say, Grandpa let his inner child come out and joined the kids in the back much of the time.
Joan and David were also kind enough to bring a bunch of spanish books that they collected from the library or bought while in the US. They made a trip to the kids´school and had a great time meeting all the kids. Interestingly enough, the school was for some time before the trip excited for their arrival. Audrey´s class had an activity where they all colored pictures of how they thought Audrey´s grandparents looked.
