Road trip

In early December (I think), we decided to go on a trip to the coast. We have realized that, every now and then, we need to get away for a bit, to be with just our family, and to have a break from the colder nights. We decided that we would drive to the coast, to a place that was reasonably close to Otavalo. The area around Atacame was the closest clean beach, so we headed that way. We were kind of expecting the road to the beach to be similar to the road to Guayaquil, that is, horrible, but were pleasantly surprised. It was actually a nice road, and beautiful country, as we made our way down from the mountains to the coast. There was only one road block on the way, and we loved the stop sign that the road worker was holding, a ragged sign nailed to the top of a broken-off branch.

The steep road down to the coast was framed by gorgeous scenerey. We say numerous waterfalls, this one being probably the most beautiful. The way that the rock formations and vegetation changed so dramatically as we dropped in elevation was so unique. It seemed like every few miles we would start to see different kinds of plants and flowers.

We were just about to round this bend in the road, when I swerved to avoid this huge snake in the road. No, we didn´t kill it. It´s head was already crushed, but we couldn´t miss the opportunity to show the kids. We backed up the truck, parked it on the side of the road, and all got out to check out the serpent. It was huge and not stiff, so it had to have been ran over fairly recently. A family whose house was just down the road from the snake came walking up and told us that some kids had found it, half-dead, earlier in the day, and had finished played around with it and probably finished it off with some big rocks.

After seeing me kick it to see if it was still alive, Bentz decided that he needed to step all over it to make sure it was really dead. Audrey also joined in the fun, much to Amy´s chagrin...
